Make sure that your |Chimney has been swept, if it hasn't, sweep it before using (or get it swept).

Don't try and burn logs cut down this year, only burn 'seasoned' wood, that the sap has dried in. Stack fresh cut logs for next years fires and burn seasoned wood this year (can buy in if you have to for first year).

Get some dry sticks (especially if your logs are 'rain' wet), clean your grate out, fill with rolled up balls of newspaper, put sticks on top of this and two smallest logs on top of sticks. Put full draw on grate and light newspaper. When your logs are burning well (glowing red), cut down the draw and add another log........can't beat it (I'm sitting in front of mine now!

Roll up sheets of newspaper and then make them into twists. This makes them burn slowly.Put some screwed up newspaper into the grate and lay the twists on this paper. Put quite a lot of thin firewood onto this paper and and then on top of this put some slightly chunkier pieces. At this point if you have some, you can buy small bags, put on a few pieces of coal. Finally lay on some logs but smaller rather than larger ones and light the screwed up paper. As it all burns and gets hot carefully, so as not to collapse the fire set place on the larger logs and feed accordingly. This is a full-proof way which is well tried and tested by me. Do not use any accellerent such as paraffin or even petrol as this is very dangerous. Also have a spark guard as wood can splutter and spit out sparks onto the carpet.
Have a nice Christmas

Easy - if you already have a fire grate - make sure the logs are dry - if they are damp they will never light. Then buy some firelighters - place on in the centre and light it - build up and around with screwed up balls of newspaper, and layer one or two pieces of log over it - giving it time to catch - allowing plenty of air between the burning pieces. The smaller the logs the better. If you have kindling (small dry sticks etc,) so much the better - you need to build it up gradually, dont pile too much on, and take it slow :)

Hello, you have to split the wood---you don't toss whole logs on a grate and expect them to burn. If you try to burn whole logs you will lose every time. To start them you need kindling or perhaps a small shot of diesel fuel which does not flare like gas--also you need to make sure your chimney is clean and that it has a proper draw---you can do this by twisting a newspaper and lighting the end of it and holding it up to the opening on the chimney--if it draws properly it will flare or put your paper out.
