if you have lived in the house for 10 years without changing the carpet - you need to buy new carpet : / coloring the carpet is not the thing to do.
and if you have a 1550 sq ft house, you are going to need that much carpet - if you garage is counted in that footage - drop that amount.

Dyeing the carpet is a cheap method, true, but anyone worth their salt can tell that's what you've done and is definately not a good selling point.

May I suggest you NOT replace with carpet? I've noticed after many years of checking home trends that the best selling motivator (especially if you live in the south or near the coast, or anywhere there is a lot of dirt and dust) that people flock to houses that have tile or linoleum. It's a fantastic advantage to selling to a family with children!

well if your carpeting the whole house then the answer would be 1550 wouldnt it. and if your not carpeting the whole house how the hell are we suposed to know how much of that square footage is carpet or hardwood or tile. no one here can help you. you own the house. your in the house. take a tape measure and measure your rooms that have carpet and add up those square footages.

I would get an estimate from a company who could dye the carpet first and it may save you a lot of money.

If you have to buy carpeting beware carpet sellers are the " used car salesmen" of the home remodeling industry:

Check and see what's under the carpet. Maybe you've got a nice hardwood floor.
