I have just learned about this. Some women are being encouraged by their families to kill themselves because they have caused "shame" to their families. Women in Turkey who had caused shame to their families use to be killed in by their husbands or other family members (these killings were called honor killings) but the government has cracked down on this type of killing...so forced or coerced suicide is the other option.

I am a Turkish woman, and I hate the fact that there's this kind of murder in my country. It's a disgrace to my culture, but it's true. In some rural parts of Turkey women are either being killed by their family or forced to commit suicide. It's a shame for my country. The government is supposedly working on this issue, but the truth is nobody does anything. Even little girls are killed by their very own families :(

I am most greatful that the governments have cracked down on such killings. To me it means there is no such thing as forgiveness and standing by those you love.
It makes me think that women are nothing but a shame and women were created to give men partners in live so that they can procreate.
That is no way to honor the mothers of generations and more generations to come.

I dunno. Is there a choice here? Is somebody supposed to offer an argument in favor of it?

It's just more crap brought to us, now and throughout the ages by religious zealotry, in this case, Islam, a crazy-quilt mishmosh of idiotic ideologies and brainless sanctifying of bloodletting aptly described by Levi Strauss as a "barracks religion." HEY get over to the mosque, stick your moon up in the air and pray for the strength to waste your wife and commit suicide afterwards because she showed her feet to an infidel or something. Chop off somebody's hand because he threw a gum wrapper out of the window of his donkey wagon. Etc., Etc.

Don't get me wrong, Christianity and Judaism aren't any better. All religions, in one way or another, for some reason or another, seek and manage to provide some divine justification for the very worst of our sins.

Get the charlie to bless some atomic bombs. Whatever.

But, hey, it's great to have crap like this in the world, ain't it? Who the hell would we look down on if it it weren't for the snake-charmed zombies that decided to surrender their reason and replace it with a laughably illogical load of spiritual poobah?

There is horrible misogynistic violence in the world. The honor killings, female genital mutilation, the beatings, forced marriages, breast crushing in Africa, and more besides the usual subjugation:

If you are women in Turkey and you over eat, does that make you a stuffed Turkey?
