Lake Las Vegas if you can afford it, because it combines the Vegas casino action with a nice lakeside resort with lots to do, plus all the beautiful scenery and serene desert nature. But, it's expensive.
If you need more affordable accomodations, I recommend the following:
The Orleans Hotel/Casino:
It is located just within a mile from the strip, close enough to it but removed enough also. They have great dining options, they have a bowling alley, they have shows, they have a large arena of their own for big events, the prices are usually very low, and their rooms are inexpensive but very nice (thanks to the French/New Orleans theme). Plus you're able to still go places from there, whether you go to the Red Rocks desert area or to the strip to see other hotels, etc. They have a free shuttle which will get you to the center of the strip, even if you don't have a car.
Another one to check out is the new Red Rocks Resort & Spa - it's a "local's casino", meaning it should be reasonably (or even cheaply) priced, and it's brand new and looks beautiful. It sits on the western edge of the city, where the city ends and the Red Rocks desert area begins, so again you have both at your disposal.
The Flamingo:
If you want that full "Las Vegas experience" and don't care about getting away from the action/noise/gambling etc. and if you can afford to spend roughly 100 a night per room (during the week, weekend rates much higher) then stay at the Flamingo, which is right on center strip, has a beautiful pool (one of the best in Vegas), and has a beautiful garden with live birds such as flamingos and penguins.
The Tropicana:
Another similar option to the Flamingo, with not so good a location but still a good location, but the prices will be much lower than the Flamingo. The Tropicana also has a very nice pool, not quite as nice as the Flamingo, but still very nice (waterfalls, swim-up blackjack, etc.). Also, the Tropicana is on an intersection with MGM, New York New York, and Excalibur, plus it has the Hooters Hotel and Casino next door as well, so there will be plenty for all the family to do.
You have SO MANY options in Vegas, and you know your family better than I do, so research it and I'm SURE you will find the perfect solution!!! It's there, you just have to figure it out!!! Good luck!!! :)
