Your neighbor is acting irrational, you are unsure what the problem is..He kicks your door down, is visably upset, and tells you he is going to kill you and your family..You see him walk to his truck where there is a shotgun visable in the rear window on a gun rack...you have a gun and know how to use it....you have no doubt in your mind that he will use the gun..he is 30 feet away from you and your family...What would you do...would you shoot him?..If so, at what point? would you wait for him to reach the truck? open the trucks door? have the gun in his hands,? point it at you?, or your family..?

I'd probably follow him out to his truck and shoot him when he took the shotgun off the rack BEFORE he could rack a round and point it at me. better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6

Dial 9-1-1, and leave the line open...
Get your own gun. Stay inside your door, preferably behind some cover. If he comes back to your house, and if he points the gun in the direction of the house, the dispatcher should hear the sound of gunfire.
If you keep your head and stay calm, since you have the dispatcher on the 911 line, you can ask her to send an ambulance for the poor bleeding crazy nut on your doorstep.
This will not only look good if it goes to court later (that you remained calm and kept a level head in a very stressful situation) and it will save you another phone call.

If I were home along I would wait for him to point at me(call the police while he is going to the truck or while he is kicking down your door). If my family is home I would shoot as soon as he reaches for the gun(shoot not to kill).

interesting question. If I know someone is going to harm me, I am ready to make them cold meat. However, I have worried about the legal side of things and I would want to have proof for the police that I was in danger.
If the perp doesn't have the gun, it can't be proven that he intended to harm you. Maybe you could use your gun as a club to knock his gun out of his hands..haha. j/k.
I guess I would try to utilize the element of surprise so that I could squeeze the shot off at close range. On the other hand, it might be best to run away if you don't think you can get the shot off. If you can get the shot off and he's in your home or holding the weapon - he's cold meat.

I would move my family and I into a room where I could lock the door and call the police. I would make sure that my family and I were not in a position where shooting through the door would harm them. If he tried to get through the door, or shots were fired through the door, I would then return fire. My main priority would be to keep everyone from harm (yes, even the neighbor to an extent) until the police arrived.

I would shoot him. He is threatning and has a gun that will most likely use to kill my family. Under self-defense I deserve the right to shoot him. I would wait for him to reach the truck then shoot him at the leg or stomach. I wouldn't want to wait that long for him to have a gun in his hands.

No question about it.
I would shoot him after about three or four paces into your yard. First you have a kicked in door and your family as evidence of his intent. He has a gun in his hand and is walking towards your house, that would also show his intent. I sure hope you are a good shot and hiding behind something before the bullets fly.

The first thing I would do is.....on his way to his truck I would place a call to 911, and set the phone down. I would then yell to him to stay back and in a loud voice describe what it is I do not want him to do. If he keeps coming in with gun in hand despite your plea to stop, I would then blow his A*S right back through his trucks windshield. Nobody is going to get away with threatening my family.

For legal reasons (so I can claim self-defense), I would wait until he has the weapon in hand and is facing me but I'd have my gun aimed at him before he made it back to his pickup. It is unlikely that he could turn and pull up to aim before I could squeeze off at least a couple of rounds. (I would also have my family calling 911 on their way out the back door.)
