Normally Penicyllin. Or an Anti-biotic of some kind. For a UTI infection usually all you need is Cranberry Juice. Drink 5-8 cups a day.

Urinary Track Infections can sometimes be cured by home remedies. I usually try pushing fluids for a several days to see if it clears up. If it doesn't that's when I go to the doctor. Once he knows for sure its a UTI he usually will prescribe antibiotics. The symtoms may not be a simple UTI and could be an STD.

If you want to try pushing fluids first and try to see if it will clear up with a home remedy here's what I do:

You'll need 2 to 3 bottles (64oz each) of cranberry juice. I get the Ocean Spray Cranberry Blend. You'll also need enough Kool-Aid, Tang, or Tea to make at least 4 gallons of drinks. I use Kool-Aid becuase I can have more variety. If you prefer you can drink plain water, I just prefer something with flavor.

The cranberry juice help make you pee so you need to go through at least 1/2 (32oz) of a bottle, but try for an entire bottle each day. Don't drink it all in one or two glasses, you need to drink small glasses spaced between drinks of water/Kool-Aid.

You should be drinking at least 2 quarts of water/Kool-Aid each day. Technically people are supposed to be drinking about 3 quarts of water per day, 2 quarts minimum in cold conditions, 4 quarts in hot conditions, 6 quarts if very active in hot conditions.

I usually drink about a 6oz glass, roughly half a soda can's worth, every 30 minutes. When I first wak up i drink a glass of cranberry juice AND a glass of Kool-Aid. This is the usual pattern of drinks (starting 30 minutes after getting up): Kool-Aid, Kool-Aid, Kool-Aid, cranberry juice. I repeat the pattern the whole day while I'm awake. I'll urinate about 2-3 times within the first 4 hours after getting up, once I hit that 4 hour mark I start urninating every half hour, so the pattern is more like drink Kool-Aid, take a leak, drink Kool-Aid, take a leak, drink Kool-Aid, take a leak, drink Kool-Aid, take a leak, drink cranberry juice, take a leak... and that's the pattern for the rest of the 12 hours I'm awake.

All that, plus I'm sipping on soda the rest of the time and go through about 3 to 4 cans of soda each day.

I do this for 3-5 days depending on when it clears up. I usually keep it up for another day or two once I start feeling better, just to make sure. I know that pissing every half hour is going to be inconvienent, but you have to do it, don't try to hold it. The idea is to keep flushing out your bladder as often as possible to eject as much of the bacteria as you can. If you hold it your just defeating the process since you're not urninating as often.

If it doesn't clear up after a few days or it comes back after it seems to clear up, you should see a doctor.

If you have had serious problems with your kidneys you may not want to try this without consulting your doctor first. He may recommend using antibiotics to treat the infection instead, since pushing fluids could be taxing on unhealthy kidneys.

You can minimize UTIs by drinking plenty of fluids so that you urinate on a more regular basis, this will prevent bacteria from getting a chance to build up.

If you are a guy, use a condom during anal sex and if you go "bare back", urinate and wash up as soon as possible after sex. Your UTI may have been picked up through that.

Another thing to consider if your a guy is that your UTI may actually be caused by a yeast infection picked up by your girlfriend. She may not be aware of it because it hasn't gotten to the point of making a noticable odor, or the infection hasn't spread down yet into her urethra (which would give her the "burning" symtoms of an infection). If you go to the doctor's and the culture test indicate a yeast infection as the cause, tell your girlfriend so she can be treated also. Besides it's not fun going down on her with that going on.

If your a girl you probably already know how to keep clean to avoid UTIs, but just in case no one told you yet... 1) always wipe front to back to keep stuff from your backdoor getting into the frontdoor. 2) during sex don't let toys, fingers, or the guy's **** go from the backdoor to the front door without being washed first. This will keep bacteria in feces from infecting the urethra and bladder.
