why or why not?

Much better than the French, the Germans have had IT bad since 1917 or so at the Beginning of WWI they were blockaded for producing better goods than France and Britain. Then after that they were forced to pay of all the war debt which led to mass insanity and the rise of Hitler.

Finally their country was separated by a wall for some 30 years, I feel extremely bad for them because they were effectively destroyed for being better producers than their neighbors.

I have lived in Germany for about 7 years now and also travelled to other countries alot. I think that no matter where you go there are wonderful people and there are a##holes. The German culture takes some getting used to. They don't beleive in American style customer service, i.e hanging all over you while you eat and following you around their store to beg you to buy stuff. It's not bad. It's just different. Overall though I would say Germans are great and I think they get a bad rap back in the US. People always associate Germans with the nazis they saw on TV once. It's not like that here.

I think the best answer is, 'why not?'

I've lived in Switzerland for more than half my life. You wouldn't believe the horrors they went though during the 2nd. World War. They couldn't get coffee beans. Can you imagine that?
I met one woman, about my age, who was convinced that her father stood on a bridge in Basel from 1938 to 1945, and all on his own stopped the Army of the 3rd Reich marching into Switzerland.

It's a couple of generations ago. Most Germans are ashamed of what happened during the 3rd Reich. Are Brits ashamed of the concentration camps in South Africa, the slave trade, the massacre at Amritsar?

Just a question. As a Brit I don't like to be made responsible for all the atrocities perpetrated by the Empire, and today's Germans don't need to have the 3rd Reich rammed down their throats. And while we're on the subject, it was the Ottoman Empire who persecuted the Armenians, not the present-day Turks.

I used to live and work in Germany. Some Germans were very pleasant yet others were not, in general, I found them polite.

Sadly, I can not say the same for the Brits I used to work with - ignorant drunkards.

I don't want to generalise. I have had some great times with German friends and I think there way of life is great - I particularly like the way they use different beer glasses for different types of beer. But, I once stayed with a family who used a knife and fork to eat bread and butter!

Yeah, I like the Germans. They are smart and very serious about things. They are fun to drink with, but don't get into a drinking contest with them..you'll lose.

I knew this attractive German girl, but then I noticed she didn't shave her armpits, which kinda took me out of my fantasy..oh well, she was nice anyway.

Having lived and worked in Germany I have no problem,as a nation they have a arrogance that is almost British.e.g.no one speaks in English!!!My wife with a limited amount of German gets little chance to practice as almost everyone tries out their English on her.

Mmmm...German Chocolate cake - I love it.

My co-worker is German and he's a nice guy. He has a lovely daughter and I have to say, they are just plain ordinary people like you and me.

I don't like to generalize by nationality or origin - I just like people for who they are; their character.
