Hiya

I suffer with IBS too and its such a pain in the **** quite literally!! lol

Im not meant to eat anything containing Wheat but for me that is just such a hard thing to do as it seems to be in absolutely everything i love..

The best thing ive found to do is i still eat it but in moderation. Like if i want to have a sandwich i try not to eat anything/too much else that contains wheat for the rest of the day...

If your suffering from consipation you can try drinking pure orange juice... Make sure your drinking your recommended amount of water every day... Also, try eating Bran Flakes for brekkie... Its full of fibre which is excellent at flushing out your system plus if you are wheat intolerant itl move you away from a wheat based brekkie...

Hope this helps hun, i know what a pain it can be!!! x

Good Luck!! x

Registered Nurse: Fibre is considered to be good for sufferers of IBS, because it is 'bulk-forming', and so helps elimination (of 'stools').

Wholemeal and 'granary' type breads are best (and are healthier anyway!) - but cheaper, sliced white bread can have the consistency of plastic, and in susceptible people, it can present your gut with an undigestible 'bolus' or lump which literally blocks your colon (gut). (UUGGGGH!!!) The result can be terrific gas-formation, and painful constipation - it takes days for that plastic bread to pass through your body sometimes!!!

Potatoes are a different story. They are more nutritious than most breads - and as long as you don't fry them all the time - they'll be kinder to your system.

You would help your digestion with a little peppermint oil each day (in the form of tablets bought over-the-counter at any chemist /health food shop). (Cheaper by far to get them on prescription).

The most usual forms of medication should not be a problem for you. However there is a wide range, and, up to a point they work in different ways. Therefore if one is not suitable, merely ask your GP to prescribe an alternative. Generally speaking, most people tend to do fine with MEBEVERINE.

Hope this is OK for you. Best wishes...x

PS; CONTRARY TO OTHER ANSWERS:
On the clinical evidence, few sufferers of IBS have "food allergies", much less Coeliac disease. So do not ADD to your worries. Patients do, however, often have poor eating habits -WHAT you eat, WHEN, and HOW FAST! - but the remedy is to eliminate the habits - not half your diet!

If you have a medical diagnosis of IBS, you have nervous over-stimulation of the gut - most often through worry /stress. "The proof is in the pudding" as they say: IBS usually 'disappears' at some point - as quickly as it came....

I have had IBS, but there's another possible reason,,, Celiac Disease, which people react to gluten as in wheat in the bread. Eating gluten free bread might be the best solution. My uncle has to change his diet to gluten free foods for the last 5-6 years and is much healthier than he was before. He had bad consipitation? I have had bad IBS recently and am on meds. Thank god!! My A** is pretty raw from all that action!!! ewww

Many times IBS is a misdiagnosed Gluten (Wheat) Allergy. You'd be surprised at all the foods that have gluten in them besides bread. To see if you have a gluten allergy or intollerance, try eliminating all gluten from your diet for a week. The next week keep a food journal and add in one gluten product. See how your body reacts after you've eaten the gluten.

Health food stores like Whole Foods and Wild Oats have lots of pre-packaged options that are really good. When making stuff at home, try using rice or soy flour instead of Wheat flour.

They're actually starting to say that anyone diagnosed with IBS, or anyone with symptoms of IBS should be checked for celiac disease. Here's a link to the information by the National Institutes of health about celiac.

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/

If that sounds like something that may be going on there are a couple of really good message boards that you can visit to find out more information.

www.celiacforums.com

I had IBS for 18 years before they figured out that gluten was causing all of my symptoms. The average time that it takes someone with celiac to be diagnosed is 11 years. It's very commonly misdiagnosed as IBS. It's worth it to check into.

I hope you feel better soon.

I have IBS and i'm on a wheat free diet, there is a special wheat free bread in the supermarkets, but i persnaly don't like it so i eat rice cakes or Nairns oat cakes, there is quite a good range of wheat free products in supermarkets these days, so give them a try. As for the constipation you could try lactulose, which is a sickly, but very effective syrup. Good luck

Brown bread is better than white. My daughter takes Spasmonal Capsules before every meal and they certainly help the situation. Ask your GP about them. She was told to avoid eating pork etc. Have a look on http://google.co.uk and type in 'Irritable Bowel Syndrome' and you should be able to find everything you want to know about IBS.

Not all bread, try wholemeal or multi grain, they have a lot of fibre which will help with the constipation. Also if you buy bread with seeds in, it will give you energy as well as fibre. I don't have I B S,but anything high in fibre should help. Potatoes should be fine in moderation(as with all food)

you may not have ibs but an allergy to some sort of food. i was told by the doctor i had ibs but actually have wheat allergy so cant eat anything now with wheat in it. you need to an ellimination diet- elliminating certain foods you eat alot of to see if your symptons clear up. need to do it one by one and give up for 2 weeks per food.
