No they don't die but they do overwinter (hybernate). I learned that from a bugman on a website called homepestsolutions.com. They are really helpful when you email them bug questions. The bug spray probably killed it. Bug spray can only kill a spider if it's body comes in contact with the spray though. Their legs usually carry their bodies safely across chemical lines, unless the have to squeeze under a crack to get to where they want to go. Then their body will contact the chemical and it will die.

I think that they move inside if they can. I just spotted one in my friends garage the other day. It was huge. Things I know about black widows is they are very timid and will usually hide before they like to be seen. Their webs are not pretty but usually a jumbled mess and very strong. If you can't see the bottom of the spider for the red hourglass, you can probably be sure its a widow, just by the huge tell tale shiny black abdomen. Be careful because there bites will make you very sick.

NO, They do not freeze, I have had bunches of them in wood pile , with I go out to get wood for fireplace there will be spiders down in the pile , when it gets warm they will move about, So NO they don't freeze.
