Generally if your in good health, flu won't destroy your life. Flu is an air borne virus. What you breath is what you get. Your body immune system makes T cells to combat the new invading virus. Once your system has created an immunity of that strain of virus you won't get it again for the rest of the season.. However there is more than one kind of virus. It mutates. At the beginning of each season I get a very slight case of flu. It is usually very mild and goes away in a few days. If you don't sleep well or already have an existing health condition the flu will set up home and stay for a while. So clean out your home and keep it that way. Eat a variety of foods, sleep well, get rid of mental stress in your body. Moderate exercise and keep the outside clean too.

A strong immune system will prevent you from getting the flu. Of course, as stated in some of the previous posts, preventative measures like hand washing are important.
I have not had the flu in years. Diet is very important.

Washing hands is essential. Now hygiene is important. Then burning incenses and herbs in your home is good. Personally I wear around my neck a little bag containing a Cotton squad imbibed wit some essential oil (thyme or pine are best).. Very good result.

Wash your hands frequently.
Your hands are the primary mechanism for transporting germs from surfaces and the air into your body. It’s important to wash your hands regularly with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds) to keep them as germ-free as possible. You should always wash your hands after using the bathroom, before handling food or eating, and before touching your eyes/nose/mouth.
Cover your coughs and sneezes
Colds and flu are highly infectious because their germs can travel through the air. The spread of colds/flu to others can be reduced if you cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, shirtsleeve, or turn your head away from others. Don’t use your hands to stifle a cough/sneeze! Remember, your hands carry many germs and using your hand to cover your mouth can result in more infections.
Avoid close contact
Avoid close contact with people who are sick, since cold/flu germs can be transmitted through the air, as well as surfaces. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.
Stay home when you are sick
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. The best treatment for the cold or flu is rest, fluids, and patience!
Prevention is best: exercise, nutrition, and sleep
When your body is well-rested, has proper nutrition, and is in good physical shape, it is better able to fight off intruders/infections and resist getting sick! So, remember to take time each day to care for your physical (and mental) health, so that you can keep your body healthy and stress-free.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Since it’s hard to keep germs off of your hands all the time, you can help to reduce your risk of contracting infectious germs by limiting their access to the primary pathways into the body – the nose, mouth, ears, and eyes. So, keep your unwashed fingers away from these entrances, avoid chewing on pencils/pens or sticking them in your ears, and throw out tissues after using them!

To stay away from flu, you might have to try not getting close to them. I hope this is the right answer.
