How much money do all levels of government have to spend because cars exist? Should all of the money that governments spend (because of vehicles) all come from drivers? If so, should the government increase taxes (a bit more) to nudge people to want alternative means of transportation?

This is a personal curiosity question. I'm already out of college so this isn't homework.

Does anyone have a dollar amount? No one curious? No one inquistive? Does no one care what politicians have to decide on?

Actually, people who drive cars pay more road maintenance taxes than those who use public transport or bicycles. I know this because my bike is my main method of transport in the summer, but I have a car for the winter as THERE IS NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION where I work. Car drivers pay taxes on their licences, vehicles and on fuel, plus they subsidize public transportation systems with extra charges on their licences. If people didn't drive cars, I doubt the government could pay for public transit; its users would have to pay full rates instead of subsidized ones.

Much, much less than the income derived from them.
Registration, inspection, parking violations, moving violations, towing, tolls, etc.,etc.................If you add large trucks there's more: road use taxes, fuel taxes, another list I don't know the end of. The money comes from owners and drivers. Increase taxes? Won't help. In many places there is no alternative transportation.
