I have been in several spelling bees. I know what you're going through!! Before the bee, tell your friend that you are aware of the competition. If the two of you are good friends, you will both understand that this will not ruin your friendship should one of you win.
As for nerves, I'm the same way. I hate being in front of a crowd. Try walking around alone first. Sing a favorite song to yourself. Breathe deeply. I know this sounds funny, but once you're up there a few times alone, it will get easier. Smile, and show everybody how confident you are. If you LOOK confident, you'll be confident.
Good luck!

First, good luck to you! If your friend wins, she will know you are a true friend by being happy for her and not pout and be sad that you didn't win. If you win, don't be sad or guilty that you won over her. Also, don't gloat and throw it in her face that you won. Give her a hug and tell her she did her best and you are proud of her.
I know it's hard to be in front of an audience, but eventually you will get used to it. Take a deep breath to calm down. Don't eat a lot of sugary stuff or caffeine before the spelling bee. That will help your jitters. Drink water or lemonade. Don't think about the spelling bee because that will just get you more worried and scared. Good luck!

My son was in a spelling bee recently. Actually did second place in his class group. Which is fairly good. I'll give you a hint... The one that did win, actually received the easier words. It all lies in which words you get. Its a game of chance. I wish you the best and your friend. And who ever wins, just make sure you tell them, that was tough, it was a good fight and I'm glad it was you, cause I know you would give me a good fight. If you lose, you tell her how proud you are of her. Good luck and remember, it will be in the words...... Hope for the easy ones!

I was in a spelling bee once. I found that closing my eyes and picturing The word in my mind helps me, because I can tell if the word is spelled wrong just by looking at it. And if you win, tell your friend that it was really close and don't rub it in their face. If they win and they brag about it, just ignore them, a real friend won't, though.

First of all calm down. Think of this as something fun to do and if your friend wins so be it and if you win awesome. Could be someone else may win too. Just get up there and have fun with this. You will do fine.

Chug down a shot of Jack Daniels before you start. That will calm your nerves.
