is it the E36? (older shape the same as say a m,n,p,r,s etc etc! If so you either use the proper reset tool or you can flash pin number 7 to earth! To do this just search internet for "e36 reset service light" and you will find out pretty easily.....Trust me it works!!! If its the latter E46, then you do need a reset tool i believe!

You have to have a tool for it. It plugs into the diagnostic port under the hood.
