Hispanics generally (I think) do not want to learn English. I think that they would like to have Spanish be as prevalent in America as English. I live in Texas and almost anywhere you go signs are in Spanish as well as English. School papers, newspapers, fast food drive-ins grocery stores, etc.. all make learning English unnecessary!

There are some Hispanics who don't bother to learn English. I'm Hispanic and I know English as do members of my family. I would really like for those Hispanics to learn English. Many don't do it becuase they live in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood where spanish is spoken. The government also enables them by getting spanish-speaking employees at companies or translators. They should just learn English.

I think it would be unfair to all to answer this question with only a single answer, I would say there are nearly as many reasons as there are people in America who can't speak fluent English. However in light of that I will give five possible reasons: 1. Insufficient access to practical and affordable ESL classes. 2. Many hispanics find it embarassing that they can't speak English and as a result take no effort to ask or seek help. 3. Lack of desire and need for learning English, face it, you can live without it. It took my family 3 generations for English to overtake German as their primary language, and that was fine until anti-german sentiment struck during WWI, everything in my city was bilingual or simply German. 4. Have you tried learning a second language as an adult? It is very difficult for a monolingual, often undereducated person to learn another language. 5. I also believe there is a great pride among hispanics regarding their ancestry, and feel it is a rejection of their past to replace spanish with english.

Because there are many Hispanics in the US and as they live in community, among Hispanics, they don't really need to speak english. It is too bad when they aim to integrate such a society. The real question is not why theu can't speak english but how can they integrate american culture without speaking english.

Spanish speaking people in Texas used to irritate me, but then I moved to Europe for a few years. Everyone was accommodating regardless of how horrible my language skills were. It kind of got me thinking that Americans can be real picks, sometimes. In Europe, people want to learn the languages of their neighbors.
I'm still not fluent in any language other than English, but I don't feel hostility towards people who don't speak my language.

I think it's a great question. I don't get it either or have a rational answer to your question. If I moved to a foreign country, I would learn whatever language it was that was spoken in that country. I would not expect the natives to cater to me and I certainly wouldn't expect the new country to educate my children in English and for the taxpayers of my new country to pay for it. The same with health care and other benefits that should only be for nationalized, taxpaying citizens.

that's kinda rude. my mom is Vietnamese, she came here 10 years ago and is now successful. she has almost everything. she stared driving in 3 years after she lived here, and she lived a better life than people that had lived here their whole life. Hispanics are hard working ppl, and the ones that can't speak english well are immigrants, but their children will be very successful later on. same with the Asians. America needs more smart ppl like them, not those people that still have their arms and legs but act like they poor and can't do anything. the needy should start working too instead of asking others for help (unless their disabled....)

,,,, I agree with you ,,,there are city's in the USA that in areas you can not even find a place your going to because you cant read their signs or streets. I feel that if you live here LEARN THE LANGUAGE, we wouldn't be able to live in another country and take up a small part of a city and claim it as our own, with only English spoken,,, as you I am also not trying to be mean so people don't give me the thumbs down

Our exchange student we had from Mexico said they are too lazy and only want what they want from here, to learn the language was not part of that want. His exact words were that "the mexicans in our town were dirty and bad people". Why he said that is beyond me, but he obviously knows them better than I do since he is from there and has studied his cultrue more than I ever will.
Very interesting to hear this from him and learn of what he thinks of his own people. He said only 20% of all of mexico is good. WOW !
