July 3rd 06 I wrecked a four wheeler and it landed on my right leg. My leg still has scars and the part where it hit is almost hard compared to the rest of my leg. My ankle is still bruised and when I walk for a while my ankle and foot swell and the pain in that leg is almost unbearable. I've been trying to get into shape so I'm walking 3 miles on my treadmill everyday. Yesterday I didn't have any problem with my leg, but today I did a mile and I had to stop. Now my foot and ankle are swollen. It's like an extremely painful cramp in the front of my leg. It's not a potassium type cramp. I take multivitamins and I've eaten today. This happend 5 months ago. Why am is it still giving me trouble? I went to the hospital after it happened and there was no blood clots or anything. Just bruising of the bone and tissue, but shouldn't that be okay by now? I'd really like to continue walking 3 miles on my treadmill. I feel good doing it. Is there any thing I could do so it isn't so painful?

If you actually broke your leg, this pain is most likely a result of your bone still being in the healing process. If you didn't break your leg, it could be a stress fracture, which can't be seen on regular x-rays until 2 or more weeks after the stress fracture occurs. If a stress fracture is suspected, if its been 2-3+ weeks since the pain started, then an x-ray could possibly show it. Otherwise, a dr. might order a nuclear medicine scan, which shows stress fractures a lot better. When they inject the radioactive isotopes (just a small dose that won't harm you, but makes the image a lot clearer), they will gather around the area of bone that is fractured, or in the healing process from a fracture.

First of all let me say please don't ever ride an ATV again. I've seen so many people killed on them and even more with severe head or spine injuries that permanently disable them.

That being said, what likely happened if you did not fracture your leg is that you probably disrupted blood and lymph vessels in the muscles of your thigh. There was probably a collection of blood in the muscle (known as a hematoma) and over the past several months this has likely scarred in. I'll bet that is the hardness you're feeling. In terms of the swelling, that is likely due to disruption of lymph vessels. The lymph system collects fluid that escapes into your tissues from your bloodstream and returns it back to your blood stream. If that system is disrupted, the fluid that collects naturally in your soft tissues due to fluid pressure and gravity will stay there until it can be slowly reabsorbed in the remaining lymph system.

If your ankle is still bruised and painful to walk on, I would suggest an MRI to rule out ligamentous injury. It should not be this painful this far out from your injury.

This is all speculative since I can't do an exam on your leg, but these might be some of the things going on. You would need imaging studies of your leg and evaluation by a doctor to tell you for certain, but you're right, if there was no injury you should be feeling better by now. If all injuries are ruled out and you have persistent swelling in that leg due to lymph system disruption, there are tight fitting wraps and leggings that can prevent swelling when you're on your feet. When you're at rest, I would elevate that leg. Hope this helps a little bit.
