This gets asked often, and answered wrongly often.

In the United States (and most other places) your work is copyrighted from the moment you write it down. There is no need to register the copyright to get the most basic copyright protections.

However, there are reasons to register -- when you sue there are some damages you can only get when you've registered, and registration gives you a presumption that you wrote the piece and provides a sure way of showing that you were in possession of the work as early as the time you registered. It isn't very expensive, so you might consider it.

The US Copyright office is helpful: start here: http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/

The so-called poor man's copyright is simply a way of showing you had the document at a certain time, and not a great way (and it only works at all if you don't open the envelope after you've sent it to yourself). It doesn't create a copyright, nor increase your rights.

There's always the poor man's way. Mail it to yourself. That way you will have it posted and dated. If anyone tries to steal your stuff, you'll at least have proof that you wrote it before they did. Just a thought.
