Humours were considered the four fluid elements in personality and season. If one was disproportionate with the others, then a humor was drained from the body to equilibrium, hence bloodletting.

Sanguine - Blood, spring, optimistic
Melancholic - Black bile, fall, artistic
Choleric - Yellow bile, summer, leader
Phlegmatic - Phlegm, winter, shy

It was like using astrology as scientific fact. Just like astrology, you can see the relationships in hearty spring, moody artists, strong leaders, and sickly shy people.
