If you can get a lift, M25 across the Dartford crossing, all the way to Brighton Road, M23 - off peak about 1 hour (when busy give yourself 1 1/2). Otherwise train to Liverpool Street, Tube to Victoria then Gatwick Express (About 2 1/2 hours).

A12>M25 towards Dartford>over the bridge>M25>M23> south,,come off at Gatwick and follow the signs for the South Terminal

Train to Liverpool Street station (NOT Kings Cross as someone seems to think!) Metropolitan/Circle or Hammersmith and City train 3 stops to Farringdon, cross to the adjacent platform and take a Thameslink (or 'First Capital Connect' train as they now seem to want to call it). They generally run every 15 minutes. Buy a through ticket - that will be valid on Underground too.
