Does it entail? A trip to the DMV, + one to the Social Security Administration, The Selective Service will need notification of course (I'm male by the way). Anyone ever done it? I might gain a public profile in the next year + need to distinguish myself from a namesake relative.

If you are going to gain a public profile in such a short time, you should seek the advice of a competent attorney. you don't want your public profile to be one of you reporting to prison, do you?

The cost for this will vary from state to state. In Minnesota, it's about $200 for a name change. You have to appear before a judge and explain the reason why you want to change your name. In MN, you also have to bring character witnesses who swear that you are changing your name for a lawful reason (i.e., not to defraud your creditors).

AFTER you do the court part, you go to the DMV and Social Security and all of that.

search "civil divison manager" of your county court online. Then go to that website, and call them and ask them where you can apply (whee can you obtain application). Do not sign up for the packages, b/c they ask for money while the civil helps you. My sister did that, and found applications from the county court house and is mailing those along with a $200 hundred dollar check. The process does have to be done in court, but you don't need a lawyer. If you live in NJ, then i can email you the application, just let me know.

Call the county clerks office and as them what the charge is and way steps to take. But I do agree that if this is for a public profile it might be worth your while to get a lawyer

No dont go to the DMV( Department of Motor Vechiles) You have to go to the court house, and you will have to go before a judge and explain to him why you want to change your name and pay a fee and the judge will have to approve it.
