The one that comes to mind (that I can verify as being a 1989 commercial) is a Nike cross-trainers ad with Bo Jackson. Bo was a professional football player AND a professional baseball player - in the same year. The ad shows Jackson playing various sports with that sport's icons of the day, each one saying, "Bo knows baseball,"..."Bo knows football," "... basketball," "...tennis," "ice hockey," etc. Then you see him playing guitar - badly - with legendary blues guitarist Bo Diddley, who says disgustedly, "Bo, you don't know diddley."

1989 was the year of the "Like a Prayer" controversy. Madonna did a wholesome commercial for Pepsi. It was only aired once, but I remember the commercials FOR the commercial - yeah, seriously. Her video came out the next day and the huge uproar over the video spilled over to the Pepsi commercial, so they never aired it again.

I think Spuds McKenzie commercials were around then. He was the bull terrier dog that did Budweiser ads

Probably a toss between the Energizer Bunny or Mr. Whipple and the "Please don't squeeze the Charmin" ads.
