It's called snarting. It doesn't hurt unless you have to burp somewhere in there, too.

Yes, and usually the fart is unintentional. It's like you sneeze the fart out. A momentary relaxation of the sphincter. Then you hope nobody heard that little squeak. Right?

My son does all the time but he's 2 so no surprise there. I don't think it hurts because he doesn't ever cry.
