On a students budget, you should probably look in Brighton, Alston or Sommerville (across the river next to Cambridge). The Back Bay may be affordable. There should be plenty of student housing available in those neighborhoods.

If you have a bit more to spend, look in the North End or Beacon Hill.

Ouch! Not the best part of town there. I'd focus on the Allston-Brighton area, but avoid the area around the Fidelis Way projects at Washington St and Commonwealth Ave. Look for something on or near the "T" Green Line (streetcars) and commute on the T.

The Back Bay is a safe bet but more expensive. Brookline, along Beacon St especially, is good but again it's more expensive. The T runs right down Beacon St so getting around is easy. Somerville and Cambridge are good bets as well.

South Boston and Dorchester are close-in to Columbia Point but the neighborhoods are highly variable; you really should limit any searches there to first-hand once you get to know the area. Sadly, race still matters in Boston so you need to be careful in some neighborhoods. I'll say no more on that and leave it up to you to decide once you get there; some neighborhoods have probably changed since I lived there a number of years ago.

Think twice about bringing a car. Public transportation is excellent so you really don't NEED a car. Parking is expensive and apartments with reserved parking go at a significant premium. Insurance rates are breathtakingly high, especially for young people living within the city limits. A high performance car can easily cost more to park and insure than your apartment will cost! If you must have a car, bring something older and paid-for and just get liability insurance.

Wherever you go, be prepared for sticker shock -- unless you're from NYC or San Francisco. Boston is an expensive city!
