There are no large or small Oscar's, the juvenile ones are about 2-3 inches, and grows upto 10-12. Some people say that albino oscars (the white ones) are smaller than the usual oscars, but I have not seen so in my practical fishkeeping experience.

A 30 gallon is good to start off with 2 juvenile oscars (remember, they are social fishes, and cannot be kept as a single in the tank unlike some other cichlids) but they would overgrow your tank in about 6-10 months and then you need a bigger tank.

Otherwise, they are one of the best fishes I have come across after Flowerhorn cichlids..

Oscars are all the same type, they merely come in an assortment of colours and patterns (all line bred off one variety, the 'Velvet' or 'Black' Oscar. This basically means that there is no Oscar suitable for a 30 gallon tank because they all grow bigger then a foot.

There are, however, other cichlids that you can go with, like Convict or Firemouth, that are good for this size of tank.
