Reading posts from people here, I'm not sure that the things I think are American values are the same things that other Americans value. If you think this is a great country, tell me what is so great about it. (If you aren't American, let me know where you are from, I'd like to know what the rest of the world thinks of the US as well.)

United States is a good country because it lets you be you. You have freedom of speech, you can dress however you like and so on. Also, in the US you can start with nothing and become something. My family came to the US 19 years ago with NOTHING and now, we have our own business and we are living a comfortable life. In the US you can do that, you can make it only if you try. And yes, it has a lot of negatives too, but which country does not? Every country has a flaw. ALSO US is like 3 times bigger then a lot of countries, so of course its harder to manage and I think so far, its good. Only problem I must, say is the media.

What isn't wonderful about this country. Yes, driving is a privilege, one that you must earn and respect. If you abide by the laws then you get privileges, if not they are taken away. It is just like when you were growing up, if you did what you were supposed to your parents rewarded you. Bush is a wonderful president and I stand behind him all the way. How can anyone say that this war is an invasion of their rights? They violated us, they killed our people and now Bush is cleaning up them mess left from other presidents. He is trying his best to do what is right and to protect us. We are like his children and he the parent who wants no harm to come. America is the one place where if you don't like your government you can speak out against them w/out the fear of being executed. You can have as many children as you like and not be forced into a white collar job because you have more than two children. You can start in poverty here and become a wealthy American. You can depend on the government to lend a helping hand when you are in need. Tell me, how many other countries have as many programs and benefits as America? None, not one has as much help to offer the citizens. But you must also remember that we are not a perfect nation but we try. And freedom didn't come free.

The US is a shadow of what it was and COULD be ..if left to the current course the only outcome is revolution.... when the poor become too poor and they begin too starve then the revolts will come and the government will try to quell the uprisings and label them as GANG ACTIVITY and then more violence will flood the streets and more police and eventually soldiers will fight the innocent untill the country is in flames and the people have once again counquered the oppressors of their liberties and have elected a NEW and UNCORRUPED government body .

THEN they are corrupted and the whole SHI TTY thing starts all
over .

THE SH IT IS COMIN AND IM STEPPIN out of the way

I am a America it great. My ancestors came here from Germany in search of a future and a freedom to worship God the way they wanted too. in the Mid 1800 migrated to Texas to fight in the for Texas in the The Mexican War. After the war instead of going back to Virginia they stayed and farmed the land that was giving to them so they settle the land and that was the beginning of my roots in America... It is a land of opportunities and we love it here. You can make as much money as you want. It all depends on your scarifies to make it happen. I love it. The only problem is the radicals that think that we don't have a right to believe the way we want. I know that every one in America is not Christians but we should have the right to be one if we want as long as we don't hurt others because they are not like us.
We have poverty but most of this is due to people who are unwilling to change. They depend on our great government to supply them a meal but giving a job they wouldn't lift a finger to work. They think society owes them something..

I am proud to say I am an American. What is so great is that we do accept forums like this where everyone is allowed to post and respond freely. I teach and remind my students everyday that not all children around the world are allowed to go to school. We do not have to worry that we will be tortured for teaching. I can walk down the street wearing shorts and not worry that some extreme religious faction will have me arrested. I love our country and would die defending it.

I am happy to be American, though Bush hasn't helped our image abroad. This country is full of natural beauty, from dense forests, to beautiful beaches, mountains, lakes, deserts-you name it! Also, the majority of Americans are decent, hardworking people. And do we have flaws? Of course, but that is true of every nation on earth. All in all, I'd rather live here than anywhere else.

I am Mexican American and I think America is a great country but, even though they say it's the land of the free it's all contradicting it's self. this country is very controlling in a sense that nothing is free. lets say you need a DL it's not a right to drive but a privilege. there are many good things but also many bad. And hopefully I will live long enough to see the best results yet to come.

I am an American citizen and I do believe that America was a great country. However, since George W. Bush took over, I believe that America is on its way of becoming the greatest Banana Republic ever! And it will happen within this century.

America is okay, certainly less free than in her past. Still, in America even the incredibly stupid have a chance at wealth. There is freedom of speech to the point of obsurdity, no revolutionary armies recruiting school children like what can be seen in some places in Africa. We can critisize our Commander in Cheif without fear of imprisionment, torture, or execution. American values vary with the American from extreme reactionary right wing beliefs, to extreme leftist beliefs and everywhere in between. America has decent health care, the only drawback is its extreme cost and the corruption that goes along with it. Without medical insurance or aboundant wealth, they will let you die. All in all, America is okay. There is good and bad in all the world's places. However America's greatest attribute is the financial opportunity. It is possible for anyone to get ahead if they have the proper motivation/drive and you don't even have to speak the language.
Major drawbacks:
Some obsurd laws that limit previously held freedom.
Gradual movement towards socialist style government without socialist benifets.
(Ie. higher taxes comprobale to socialist societies without socialist programs)
Almost non-existant morality or religious beliefs.
Scandalous and corrupt government
High Crime in urban areas
Huge rift between rich and poor
Blatant materialisim
Non existant family values

Some good attributes:
freedom of speech and expression to the point of obsurdity
Financial opportunity for those who want it
Stable government albeit scandoulous and corrupt
Relitive security when compared to other parts of the world.
decent standard of living when compared to third world

It is all a matter of opinion, is the USA great? Absolutely when compared to Sudan.

Maybe, maybe not when compared to Europe or Canada.

Hi, I'm French and though I like very much travelling to the USA, I think that the current Bush administration has led a vast majority of people around the world to hate the Americans.

It's incredible to see how 6 years of Bush-ism has destroyed the excellent image that Clinton had given of America.
