Also, is the AP just as much of the national championship as the BCS?

Well...sort of. USC won the AP national Championship, then the BCS Championship, and then last year they were playing for the BCS Championship again.

So...depending on who's National Championship (AP vs. BCS) you consider the TRUE Championship, I guess you COULD say that they were going for the three-peat...but Texas stopped them anyway so it doesn't really matter.

USC was going for a three-peat because it would have been their 3rd consecutive championships...I think that USC is highly overrated though... I mean look at Michigan. They lost to #1 Ohio State by 3 points in a close one. USC on the other hand lost to an unranked Oregon State. The fact that USC is making it to the national championship is a JOKE! The BCS is corrupted and the AP is a bunch of men in suits who probably couldnt make a decision between chicken or beef let alone who plays in the National Championship.

USC did not win the BCS championship in 2003 LSU did USC should have played LSU instead of OK but thats the mess that is the BCS. USC was the AP champ and the AP isn't even apart of the BCS system anymore LSU went home with the trophy plain and simple

Fluke. USC is over rated. Very good yes, but over rated. How many other years have you heard people question who the national champion simply because the AP is different than the BCS. Hardly ever. I think it's wrong to take the glory away from LSU. THE ONLY 2003/2004 national champions. USC has one championship(2004/5), period.

Also, does the AP have a bowl game to name a national champion. Nope, only the BCS. If we want to name an AP pole national champion then have an AP bowl game.

Before the BCS system actually became implemented, the colleges had to vote in favor of establishing it. USC voted IN FAVOR of the BCS system.
Therefore, USC has only won 1 national championship in this decade. Their 2003 "national championship" was the AP and not the officially recognized title under the BCS. It's also a slap in the face to LSU who actually won the title in 2003.

First of all it is spelled peat as in the last 4 letters in repeat from which the word steams.

Secondly, it depends on what championship you are talking about. If it is AP then yes they were going for a 3-peat. If you are talking BCS then know they weren't.

I think the BCS is more of a national champion rather than being an ap national champion. That is just my opinion and we all now what opinions are like.

A good example of good recruiting for a good program. Talent was in the system and exercised to a first team caliber. It is also how disappointment is born.
The AP and UPI once determined the champion absolutely. That is where the split championship came from. Now they are the barometer of football wealth but the computer determine 1 and 2 which are expected to play each other for the title. Non BCS bowl births are based on all the polls.

The AP system is just as valid as any BCS system. The AP #1 has been around for many years. The AP was also smart enough to pull itself out of the BCS debacle. If a team is voted AP they are at least co-national champs. College football has no playoffs so the AP and BCS are really just best estimates anyway. The AP is a good representation of sports writers so it is valid.

I'm a USC Fan.

But no, they weren't going for a 3-pete. that was hype. They SHOULD HAVE been, but they weren't.

They won the national championship against Oklahoma in 2004. They didn't get into the final game in 2003. Though some people called them the number one team, they weren't the BCS champs. And the system we have now might be terrible, but at least it crowns ONE winner.

The trojans, this year, will be going for their second title in three years. And that's still pretty damn good.

they were going for a three-peat for the AP national championship

they were going for a repeat for the BCS national championship

both championships are important to a team. i guess it would be the same as winning a gold medal at the olympics or the goodwill games.
