I means they are online, but they are not active on their computer. Meaning their computer is on it's screen saver.

It means that they're signed online but don't have an away icon or message up, but their computer mouse or keyboard hasn't been touched in a few mins (usually 10~15 minutes), and it makes the "idle" pop up so other users know that that person isn't at the computer currently, so don't spaz out on them for not answering you right away. =)

It means that their IM is connected but there has not been any activity on that computer for some time.
