depends which type of fir tree u buy. the ones with short needles tend to die faster than the long needled ones. i know when i was a kid we always used to wait til the 2nd week in December to buy a tree, because we found that the short needled trees were always dead after 3 or 4 weeks... so if u are buying a short needled one, i would wait at least a week more if i were u.

Hey Friend,
Here's the solution to your problem, whenever you purchase a real Christmas Tree, there's so many different types of Christmas stands out their!
You need to purchase a hard plastic christmas tree stand, that withstand the balance of the tree and in the middle of the tree stand comes with a watering system that holds water for the real christmas trees!
If you want your "Real Christmas Tree" to last for a while, I would put "Natural Spring Water" in the Reservoir, rather than faucet water, we don't really know, what's in our watering system !
My "Mom" have those "Bonzai Miniature Trees" - she keeps watering with "Kentwood Spring Water" - the tree and leaves always stand naturally green!
From time to time, check up on the levelage on the reservoir to see how low is the water is at, they should have a line on the level of the "Natural Spring Water" to add, so you won't over fill it, and spill out from it, too!
Now, remember, if you don't keep checking up on the reservoir that's holding the "Natural Spring Water" - from time to time, a week or two, it will get bone dry, and you will start seeing brown twigs.......
The Real Christmas Tree will even last pass Christmas Day, towards New Year's Day too!
Best of luck , you have a Merry Christmas '06 and Happy New Year's Day '07, always be safe, too!
You take care of yourself and others, too!
PEACE

Not as long as you care for it properly. Before you take it home you have to make sure that you or they (the Christmas tree place) saws at least an inch off the trunk of the tree. This way it will be able to absorb the water better. When you get it home you should set it in it's stand and add water immediately. Check it twice a day to make sure there is enough water.

Nope. Just make sure you cut the bottom off cleanly, and then keep it moist.
Best way to do this is to put the tree in a tree stand, fill the bottom of the tree stand with rocks or gravel (to keep the tree from falling over) and adding water every day.
Make sure you only have the tree lights on when someone's there...fires start quickly!

Do not position the tree next to a radiator or have the room in which it is on display too warm as this can dry it up. Put the tree in soil and keep it well hydrated. If you can, try to get one which still has the roots on it.

No...it will lose needles but if you cut an inch off the bottom before putting it in the stand and always make sure it is watered, then you will be fine. If you let it dry out even for one day, the bottom will seal and not be able to take in water.

not as long as you keep up on the water in the base and I know there is a trick to make it last long but forget it now. I believe its an aspirin in the water.
Also recut a few inches off the trunk before putting in the base so its a fresh cut that can draw water up. don't place near any heat vents as this will dry it out prematurely.

i never have a real tree, for a few reasons
1- house is too hot so needles fall off faster
2- cleaning the pine needles is a long job
3- trying to pinch the crackers off the tree is too painful, the pines stab me!
I do like to see real trees, and they smell great, but if your house is warm then the pines drop off faster, or if you have cats that like playing with it.
I would probably wait, or buy one now, then about 15th buy another one and have fun re-decorating it.
