An example of this kind of fashion is what the film director David Lynch wears. Basically is is a collared shirt buttoned up but with no tie. How well does it look for a white shirt, a colored shirt, or a patterned shirt? What catagory of people are most likely to wear this?

I don't think you should do it. If anything, go down an extra button. You want people to be relaxed around you when you go out socially. A man with his shirt buttoned to his Adam's apple isn't relaxed with himself, never mind those around him.
I would picture someone dressed like that to be very serious, one whose job title precedes, describes him. Eccentric, somewhat concerned with himself. Not necessarily unfriendly, just one who lives within himself.

I'm a two button down guy, so I might be biased. ;-)

Don't, under any circumstance, button the top button without a tie.

if you button it all w/o a tie, it looks like you forgot to grab your tie before you left the house. leave the top button undone

This is one of my biggest guy pet peeves.... if you want no chance of picking up girls, or if you want the girl you have to think you're a dork, button it. It makes you look clueless and pitiful. Sorry.
