It's carried in their intestinal tract as part of their normal bacterial flora.

Do you mean why can humans get salmonella from handling lizards and reptiles? It's because they aren't fussy about their poop.They tend to have fecal matter on their skin. So if a human handles a lizard and then doesn't wash her hands and then eats... well, there you go. When I was small it was possible to get very small turtles as pets. However, they were finally banned from import because poorly supervised children would put them in their mouths and get....you guessed it! .... sallmanella!

It's because they eat a lot of carrion that is a natural harbour for all manner of bacteria and germ cells.
