what would be the harm in that ?

No. As long as they are the right size (for example, AA or AAA or D ) they should work just fine.

The only real difference in batteries is whether they can be recharged, and how long they'll hold a charge to start with. Most of them are 1.5 volts, anyway.

I don't think that they would do anything to the toy. But I have tried the regular batteries in toys and if it says use only alkaline batteries then you will have to get alkaline batteries for that specfic toy .
