my kids are 13 and 8 and they have NEVER had anything BUT ice cream cakes for their birthdays... they are healthy, happy, boys and are very athletic & regular weight (the ice cream cake did NOT make them obese... ;-)
btw... your son is going to turn out great with a mom like you thinking of everything! don't forget to enjoy it yourself, too :-)

By the age of 1 year, a child's digestive system can tolerate ice cream. I would only serve very small portions if many of the guests will be around the same age. It's a special occasion so an ice cream cake would be appropriate. It would make no difference whether you served the ice cream cake or plain white cake. Either one should only be eaten in small amounts not frequently.

That would be fine. Just make sure you tell the parents what's in it. The only reason I would suggest not doing that is because an ice cream cake can be very difficult for a child to eat. Regular cake is softer, and not all parents want their child to eat both cake & ice cream.

It is best to have a seperate little cake for the birthday boy/girl to destroy, but as for the ice cream cake, there might be people that are lactose intolerant so I would also make or buy another small cake just in case.

Damage Control!!!!!!! In our family the first birthday boy or girl gets a little cake all to themselves. I dont know about you but I firmly believe any self respecting 1 year old should positively demolish the cake.
As for other invited guests, if you want to get an ice cream cake - go for it. I don't eat ice cream cake and if I was there I would just not eat any.

On my son's birthday we had a chocolate cake with mousse filling and ice cream on the side. He LOVED it! At age one the doctor usually will tell you that some common allergens are ok, (i.e. chocolate, milk, etc.) but others like shell fish and peanuts need to wait. For most children the ice cream cake would be wonderful, I would buy it. Give him the piece and grab you camcorder because it's funny to watch!

Go with a plain cake and get ice cream for the side. This way, people can pick and choose because maybe someone just wants cake and maybe someone just wants ice cream.

The ice cream cake would be too cold for the child; make him a little cake for himself and make/buy a sheet cake for the guests. Serve ice cream, too, if you want. Happy 1st b-day!

Either will do fine. Perhaps you could do him a small cake for him to put his fingers and face into and leave the ice cream cake for when he's done and the untouched ice cream cake could be shared with everyone.

Ice cream cakes are great, but one of the joys of the first b-day is watching the little one destroy the cake. I would suggest if you have a Wal-Mart Super Center in your area...go there and order and 1/4 or 1/2 sheet cake, let them know it is the child's 1st b-day and they will throw in a little bitty round cake for free. let him tear that one up and take plenty of pictures. have fun!!
