Hello,
I have a computer which I was trying to format - apparently during the format C drive gave up the ghost so now I cant even use a boot disk .. My question is this: - I originally had 2 hard drives anyway - is it possible to just go into the setup menu and change the slave to the master? Any info is good and thankyou in advance..

Actually to change a hdd from slave to master, you have to open the case of you pc, get the hdd out and in the back change the jumper position from slave to master. Each HDD on the top have a picture with instructions that tell you which position of the pins is for master and which for slave. And take out as well the former hdd that gave up. You won't need it anymore, just destroy it, if you can't recover anything, i mean physically destroy it, just to be safe from someone recovering your stuff. Security Reasons.

You wont be able to boot a formatted disk unless you used the /s switch with the format command. After the fact, you have to use the sys command. (I am not sure whether XP has these features. 98 and 95 were built on DOS, so they work.)

Your hard drive might need to have a jumper set to be a slave drive. Usually there is a small diagram located somewhere on the label, or on the printed circuit board showing you which jumper to set.

for changing Master to slave, you must change Hard Jumper
from master to slave ( located in back panel of HDD between flat cable connector and power connector ).
The jumper setting is normally written at the top of HDD.
Assuming you hace quantum or maxtor :
there are eight pins for jumper
you must change jumper from pin 1-2 to 3-4 ( vertically )

Hi
it depends on what bios is on your system.
you may have too take it too the shop and have them change the settings so your program runs on start up.
you can change your second hard drive to master but it should only contain saved files not any program such as 98,me or xp which you need to start your computer.

yes you can change boot order ,4 ex :change the value of first boot device from HD-0 to HD-1 (ofcource that depends on the M.B you have)
if that didn't work you can change it manully by changing the position of the jumber on ur HD drive as indicated on cover of the HD
