Go to Yekaterinburg... the place where the Communist killed the Tsar and his family. Large city in the Urals. You will see real Russia out there. Travel by the local trains (but keep you eye on your bags at all times - seriously!). You can hire a four berth '1st class' cabin... not great, but safer and inexpensive for westerners. Fly via Moscow and connect to Yekaterinburg.
See St. Petersberg... one of the most beautiful cities in the world. BUT, watch out for the muggers of foreign tourists.
You could sail down the Dnipre river across the Ukraine... very interesting
Go to Kiev (I know... its Ukraine... but still interesting) See Chernobyl ($50 for a days trip last time I was there) - you get about 3 or 4 hours there... a 1.5 hour minibus ride from Kiev.
So.. a few suggestions... BTW I used to work out there after the fall of Communism... so been there etc... if you want to know more feel free to e-mail me

I think the break to st petersburg and moscow is the best. I've been there. I'm a foreigner living about 10 hours from moscow, in the city of Kursk. On my winter and summer breaks, I've been on visits to Moscow and st petersburg and once to volvograd. The former 2 cities are great! Moscow, there's the kremlin and red square, other are just typical historical museums, building, etc which I think are not extraordinary. But st petersburg, you need at least 2 or 3 days. There's the town itself which is great! You can take a boat ride around the many many rivers and canals, then take a bus ride around the city at night. There are also tour packages (they call ekskursionnei programm). You should visit catherine's palace and petegroff palace, which are really breathtaking. You know, if you need more information, don't hesitate to send me an email!

Well, you are asking for a lot of info. If you want to see more than the usual candidates of Moscow and Petersburg, you could do the Trans-Sib but i wouldn't recommend it you don't speak good Russian and also it needs several weeks to do it fully. But it is fabulous.

If you want to stick with European Russian, try the ancient Golden Rings towns around Moscow. Some of them are quite touristy but slightly more off the beaten track than just Moscow. Or there's Volgograd, full of history and not very touristy.

Personally, I would avoid Moscow. It's not real Russia. It's interesting of course, but very touristy and SO huge and busy. Petersburg is seriously gorgeous though, especially in winter.

PLEASE ignore the guys above me telling you not to go. Russia is incredible and the people are the greatest in the world.

At the moment on film in England.

However, The train journey is superb across Russia, the terrain changes from mile to mile, the food and service was (don't know about now) excellent. Red square and the cathedral of golden domes is well worth the trip and Moscow has the largest library in the world. Not sure if Lenin still housed in his glass coffin or if he has disintegrated and been moved elsewhere. He looked awful years ago, like a waxed apple. If you hope to take all this in I trust you are going for longer than a weekend ??

If you arrive safely I hope you have a wonderful time. Dobra vecha. Good luck.

For f*ck's sake! It aint no Iraq here or something.....and here is more than caviar and radiation people...!!! We got like best night life in Moscow, and the center looks exactly like any other European city. If not better. DISCRIMINATION IN HERE!!! lol, seriously.
But anyways hun...it depends on wat u r interested in seeing. If its History, then go to St. P's. More active and fun in Moscow, obviously. If u want to see the subburbs and the country side, drive 100 km outside any city and here u go....its everywhere. :)

Train journey is gonna be exhausting and not gonna see much apart from trees and rivers. If u have no friends here, and dont speak russian, its gonna be boring and tough. Plus i have international friends here and they find it as safe, as in any other BIG city. So here. And i have travelled all my life, excuseme, but moscow kicks *** compared to some places...

If u r financially free, then it will be quite fun flying to a couple of diff. places. Winter isnt gonna be too cold, even snow has melted... But summer is definitely more fun, hun. And much more pretty. If u do train - then do in spring or autumn. Or in summer if it aint too hot. But its gonna take ages really...

If u drop by in moscow, pop by for a coffee! Xx enjoy it and goodluck. If u need more help, feel free to ask!

No. i don't think of the rustic is the placement. As we grow old its alot better sturdy to discover like minded acquaintances, because its unlike at the same time as were little, there is so much better drama etc. i imagine you want to amplify your social circle. it would want to't be that there are not any effective childrens at your college. i might want to point talking to someone who looks approachable. do not get hung up on "the cool childrens" as those are many times the hardest acquaintances to save. in case you we are earlier acquaintances with the favourite human beings, human beings might want to view you as one among them (in all likelihood impolite , stuck up etc). in case you nonetheless take your time someone will come round finally, despite the indisputable fact that it would want to take a at the same time as to interrupt an previous image of your self. beginning over is continuously puzzling. shifting decrease back to Russia after all those years isn't basic.my relations and that i purely moved decrease back to our abode usa after many many years, and that is been puzzling. I continuously loved it right here, yet there's a huge difference between travelling/vacation and really residing someplace. you note of alot of issues that not in any respect stricken you once you've been in straight forward words travelling . The grass isn't continuously greener on the different area. Plus, you look youthful. Being youthful and on your own is so puzzling. i might want to point staying which include your spouse and children and dealing issues out. perchance switching colleges if needed, yet no longer international places.
