It really depends on how realistic what you want is. There's nothing wrong with wanting, but if what you want is, say, to get 100 billion dollars without having to do anything for it (as an extreme example), then yeah, you'll have to compromise a little, expect to get a little less, and/or do a little more. In my opinion, neither extreme is a very good idea. Setting your goals impossibly high, and never being happy with and appreciating what you've got, results in nothing but frustration. Setting them too low (in other words, resolving to merely be happy with whatever you get), meanwhile, will most certainly take meaning and value away from your existence. Try to find a balance between those two. Don't be afraid to want more, and do what you must to get it. But make sure your aspirations aren't insane.

I guess it depends with what stage in your life you are at. Children and young adults often can get what they want and don't need to compromise as much- if only because they don't have a spouse or significant other to anwer to, and meet half way. But to some extent everyone has to compromise- even kids- because their parents have budgets and they can't have everything! The selfishness comes into it when people look at compromise as sacrifice- and become martyrs. You can compromise and change your initial desire ands still be happy.

Oh yes life is about compromise there will never be a nirvana in this life. Striving to better ones situation in life is a Nobel task as long as you don't hurt others in the process. Chase your goals in an honorable way and the reward will be that much richer when you attain them.

consider trying some of these things:
anyone who is depressive should take a good multivitamin most days with a meal. while you are at it take a calcium-magnesium-zinc pill, unless by some miracle you get enough calcium. (or you take a calcium-based antacid) also, get lots of beneficial fatty acids - particularly omega-3. take a couple grams of fish oil daily if you can't find enough dietary sources!
then try getting lots of sunlight. get some vigorous cardiovascular exercise as often as you can. practise good posture and learn a little about basic yoga postures and t'ai chi warmups. posture has a large impact on your sense of well-being.
eat a varied very high protein, high fiber diet low in saturated fats and refined carbs. shun additives and preservatives. you want fresh whole foods, not overcooked. eat leafy greens and colourful vegetables. eat tree nuts, eat fish, eat more fish, the more nutritious fruits (berries, etc.), herbs, legumes, and some grains. don't eat sweets or drink sweet/sour drinks. instead eat fruit. diet really really really matters. it has a slow cumulative effect. I know these diet changes can be inconvenient and costly. However, because the alternative occasionally involves hospitalization, and because the overall quality of your life will improve on this diet, I believe it is necessary.
stay hydrated. this can be a matter of simply avoiding certain foods that dehydrate you.
that's all that comes to mind. If you use caffeine, try 3 weeks off. If that's no good, consider optimal dosage and timing relative to work/sleep. you may wanna check if you notice any effect from ginseng pills.

I always say, compromise on some things, but most of the time, if not all of the time, try, try, and try to get what you want. As long as it is in reason...don't try becoming the president if it isn't who you truly are.

Work on becoming the dictator of some third rate nation, and then you won't have such worries. The only problems you will face, are how to hold on to your power, and if someone is going to try to kill you. A fair trade, don't you think?
