i mean, one small snag and there could be a "wardrobe malfunction". and while the person may be invulnerable, their clothes usually isn't. so why not something more... durable?

Anatomy enhancing points of tights and spandex aside.... this is more about manuverabiliy then durability. As a rule if you are covered in heavy (but durable) armor you cannot move around as fast or as easily, whereas if you are in something formfitting and light you can utilize your agility to its fullest....

And now to the anatomy enhancing points! Comics sell better when the Superheriones are clad in tight spandex and tights, rather then in bulky combersome armor. : 0

I would have to say tights are more spectacular and not all super heroes wear tights eg. Iron man, wolverine. As for wardrobe malfunctions, they are tights the only thing they should be snagging on is the person wearing them and some of those tights, depending on the hero wearing them are made of special fabrics eg unstable molecules of the fantastic four costumes, that are almost, if not just as invulnerable as the person wearing them.

They don't all wear tights. That's leftover from the 50s and 60s.

Nightwing's uniform is Kevlar/Nomex blend, which fits like spandex but protects like body armor.

And some of them only need to wear tights. Susan Storm-Richards [Fantastic 4] has a forcefield, so she doesn't need armor. Tights are better for ease of movement.

Ben Grimm [Fantastic 4] is walking armor.

Armor on Spider-Man is a recent thing, but since he and Tony Stark parted ways, I understand he's back in the Red and Blue.

It varies by the superhero.

Tights are easier to draw and the artists do not have to show each individual article of clothing flapping in the breeze as they move only a cape(if applicable) and then as a free flowing sheet of cloth it would simply drag behind and can be articulated with one color, limited shadow, and only a few crease lines.

Within the Superhero Universe(Marvel, DC, or which ever you prefer) I believe it is about mobility, flexability and range of motion. Spiderman for example is far more agile and mobile than normal people(hence his superhero status) A pair of Jeans will not follow him into his poses, and would be more likely to malfunction. Also Tights can be concealed under street clothes making it easier to duck out of sight for a few seconds and re-appear in costume to save the day.

Batman and Robin both wear a light weave kevlar in their tunics,as for the invulnerable types most wear uniforms of unstable molecules or have a protective field that renders anything in close contact with their bodies invulnerable as well, the speedsters seem to have a friction negating aura that encompasses their bodies while in motion. Hope this helps

Actually it's the artist choice. Most artist choose form fitting costumes, because it's a way to artistically show off the physique of the heroes. If you read some hero back stories, you'll find that "wardrobe malfunctions" would be at a minimum because of the composite make-up of the fabrics in the costumes.
Take Superman for instance, his costume is made up of the swaddling clothes that he was sent to earth in, which were made of Kryptonian fabrics(which react to our atmosphere as he does). Then you have the X-men(comic book of course!!) who were battle tested reinforced garments, that are suited to each hero according to his/her powers or abilities, i.e. Colossus' clothing stretches to make up for his added height, mass, and density when he changes into his metal form. His clothing is also made to accommodate his resistance to extreme heat and cold, incendiary and projectile damage. Plus would you respect a flying guy in a purple track suit, and Adidas?

Becuase the tights are usually made of some resistant material that is super power full. They are form fitting and not heavy like armor.. so a good choice for the town super hero

Because super hero's need to move fast if the wear armor they will never get there on time for the rescue. It would be very hard to wear armor under your regular clothes, so something like Thermal underwear is more inconspicuous. Jajajajajajajajajajaja

well to begin with, a superhero is supposed to be invincible. So he doesn't need armor to protect him from his/her enemies.

The tights basically show off his/her lean, mean fighting trim bod.

and though I've never seen them do it in the cartoons, i assume that it's cheaper to replace tights than anything else. Wonder what he checkout clerks think in the stores? especially for repeat customers.......lol.

I guess it is to be more flexible most superheros have to move fast and tights would enable them to do so. I'm sure there are some superheros who do wear armor.
