www.tootsie.com lists 3 different independent experiements conducted by researchers. The people at Purdue invented a machine to lick the tootsie pop. Others used hundreds of human lickers. The results can be found at this website:

I'm actually going to test this in my Stats class, then I'm going to compare it to Charmed lolly pops. I figured out how to avoid the loss of salivia too, use a damp washcloth and wipe the surface of the lolly, this will give a consistance pressure and dampness. I'll get back to you all on my results!

according to the owl in the old commercial, it was "1....2.....3...." and then he bit.....I personally never "licked" a tootsie pop, but let it sort of melt in my mouth, until I decided to bite it, so, maybe for me the answer is "1" if you count letting it "melt" in my mouth as a lick....

I hated that commercial b/c I could never keep a good count when I was a kid AND I would always get impatient and bite it.
