I have had my beta for three years now, living in the same tank which I clean regularly. I have fed him the same food throughout all this time. For three years he has been healthy and happy. Recently he has had gas, which causes him to float to the surface. Also when he goes to eat the pellets i lay on the surface, he misses, them. It is kind of like his depth perception is off. I don't know what to do about it. Has this happened to anyone else's beta? Please help and offer any advice on saving Leo!

Wow i am amazed so much. I love bettas more than any fish in the whole world. I can't believe he lived for three years you are so lucky. Yes he may be getting blind possibly an injury in the tank. Do you have a magnifying glass? I would suggest getting a closer look at him! That way you can see if it appears that the pupil of his eye appears clear almost like a covering or a possible injury. I will try to do some research for you to see if i can figure this out. You make me feel like getting another betta i had a really cute one i called "tata". I love that fish so much he would kiss my finger and loved treats! I really think he is getting old but you can never rule out a possible infection and he may need tetracycline from the fish store. (you just gave me good idea for christmas for my hubby ..when he returns from Iraq i will set up a fish tank for him!!!) Oh one thing from my experience is don't put live plants in tank my betta got these hook worms (we had to take him out and use tweezers to remove them like more times than i can count. Leo sounds so adorable. Okay i will look into this and get back to you okay. Good luck!

I don't know how old your beta fish might live to however have you consider a fungal disease. However must of these diseases are identifiable by discolouration on the fish. Most comonly around the eyes, mouth or gills. also by joints where fins, etc. attach.
If so then you need to note the apperance and consult a book/website/fish shop/ or back here with more details
Best of luck

3 years is impressive as it means he's 3.5-4 years old. The floating is called swim bladder disorder. I suspect he's getting bloating due to over feeding, or other disease brought on by mildly poor water conditions. I'd advise being sure to keep him warm, his water clean, and don't over feed (no pot bellies). With care he'll last another year or so. (3-5 year is generally the life span of a betta.) See betta talk link details.

He's just getting old. I had this happen to one of my betas (I have seven) There's nothing that you can do other than what you've been doing. Just make sure he's happy!

well, congrats for raising him for that long. he is old. maybe you should not give him pellets and give him some softer foods. Live worms, frozen bloodworm or glasswords, daphia.
