A muff is a result of an "uncontrolled touch" either caused by the kicking team interfering with the right to catch the kick or by a player being struck by the ball unawares (such as getting hit by the ball while downfield covering the kick. A ball that has been POSSESSED and FUMBLED after a kick however, is live and can be returned.

That rule doesn't apply for kickoffs. I watch an NFL guy touch the ball and just stand there while the opposing team just scooped up the ball and ran it in for a touchdown.
The muff punt rule was made in 1927. It was also when they moved the goal post back, added the shift and huddle time penalties and allowed latteral passes to be declared dead if not caught. Remember a punt returner couldn't just signal a down at that time so the punt returner would have had to run the ball. Imagine a punt returner trying to make a catch but the defense was right there to hit the guy when he didn't have full control of the ball. Then the guys could then just scoop up the ball and run it in for a touchdown.

I'm pretty sure the kicking team can return a muffed punt or kick-off for a touchdown, assuming that the recieving team makes a play on the ball. There must have been some other reason.

At all three levels of play, a team cannot advance their own kick if they recover it. Since a muffed punt is never "possessed" by the other team, it is still a kick (not a fumble) and thus can't be advanced.
I don't know exactly WHY this is a rule, though. I would assume it was made at some point to prevent some sort of abuse of the kicking rules.

I would put Andrew Luck on the Jets. I was very tempted to go with J.J. Watt, but the QB position is the most important position in the game. edit: I'm not sure why Packers fans are picking a 28-year-old RB. Peterson is amazing, but RBs have short careers. If I were GB, I'd take 23-year-old hometown kid J.J. Watt, who could anchor that line for the next decade. The Packers lack a 3-4 d-lineman who can get to the QB. Watt would change that instantly. @ Panthers fan - Luck would put "Swag" Newton out of a job.

I'm with ya. I was rewinding it like 5 times to hear what Bryant said cause I didn't get it either. Apparently it was illegal touching because they didn't start where the ball was initially recovered.
