Dirty stockings get thrown on the bed post. Christmas goody stockings go on the mantle. Where exactly are you from?

Well I dont have a mantle, so we hang our stockings along the bannister. Its nice because you can see them as you are coming into the house. Never heard of the bedpost thing but that sounds like a good idea.

Well I do not have a mantle or bed posts so I hang mine, and my daughters, on hooks on the wall by the tree.

the mantle is traditional but you can hang them where ever you want. I think its a great idea to start your own tradtions. Something that only your family does that you can pass down through the generations. It will make the holidays even more special for you and your family. just a thought.
