Looking at the global map, you can clearly see for example if you had to transport a big shipment from, for example New York to San Francisco or vice versa and you had no Panama Canal the ship would have to go all the way down South America down to Cabo de Hornos and then up again to San Francisco. That´s about 80,000 miles that you could skip if you had the Panama Canal as a short cut. This is only one example. With the Canal Transportation would be much cheaper and faste. Goods would reach their destiny and consumers at lower prices. A gigantic step for commerce.

The Panama Canal was improtant to move ships between the oceans. This improved the mobilization of the military of the US and increased trade. This canal would later allow quick mobilization of the US navy in WWII. This mobilization was, by the way, what made a US military base at Guatanomo Bay, Cuba important to the US. They needed a base of operations close by so they could move ships.
