hey, don't sweat it. remember what happened to Dan Quayle? he was running for VP when he spelled potato wrong.
i don't think it reflects on your intelligence. sometimes when i write on the computer real fast i tend to strike the wrong letters but i always use the spell check when it is business related.
in a nutshell , when it IS business related or out there for everyone to see, you should try to make sure everything is spelled right otherwise you will get the negative responses you got. personally, my pet peeve is when i get an email from top admin and some words are spelled wrong. it makes me feel embarrassed that they have been promoted to a higher position than i and they can't even spell. i feel it is a reflection of who they represent and my country.
PS you did spell forty correctly!

Some errors are typos, not true spelling errors. I think it matters to the extent that correct spellings show pride in your written words- but certainly the more you write (your 40 anwers) increases the odds you'll make an error either in typing or spelling. I do agree that very smart people can be really poor spellers- due to a variety of reasons.
Some people who criticize will find something to nit pick about, they so I say just carry on and ignore those small minded people.

I'm ok with a few mistakes. But when your question/answer is unreadable or will take too much time to interpret do to lack of education, sorry I have no patience. I've even become more tolerant since I started having my doubts about the spell check in this program but even so some people are just .......well I can't understand what they're trying to say!

I do correct people when they spell wrong, but I do not critisize them. It makes me mad when some people take offense. I try to help them out, especially when it's for an essay or something. (or in French when he started spelling English words like French words... lol that was funny... he even agreed!) Some people do not want to improve their spelling, others do. I wouldn't care about two words. I may tell you they're spelled wrong, especially if you slaughtered the word, but I wouldn't critisize you. There are a lot of words I spell wrong, and it makes me angry when I do spell them wrong. I always want to improve my spelling, and I try to help others, but they get mad. I just hate seeing words spelled wrong, but I do tolerate it!
P.S. I do know that some spelling freaks critisize others and sometimes their intelligence for spelling words wrong. Like me, they do spell words wrong. They're not perfect, either, and do not know how to spell every word in the English language. Ignore them!
I also know that spelling does not reflect intelligence. My dad is a smart man. He has a high IQ. He didn't go to college and isn't very good at spelling. He had dyslexia growing up, and it's much better now that he's an adult. He thinks he's stupid, but I know that he is not.
There are many of my classmates that are smarter than I am, but are HORRIBLE at spelling!

Spelling should not matter on here, unless it makes your question or answer unreadable. Do we all really want to spell check every answer we give? Probably not! If you are righting an essay or a work for publication, then of course your spelling should be perfect, if not, everyone can just get over it!
Note:
I find it very funny that a person who answered below says that they correct people for spelling wrong but does not criticize, and then spelled criticize WRONG!! HA-HA!!! Uses your spell check if you are going to correct others yourself!

I think spelling does reflect ones intelligence. Big words are one thing, but spelling poorly and using "u" or "ur" it's just not necessary. I mean, how hard is it to hit two more letters? Same goes for grammar, it bothers me. I do judge people if they can't spell simple things or use simple grammar techniques. There's a "check spelling" button right above the answer box for Christ's sake. ;p

Sometimes, people just need things to complain about.
Really... with chat shorthand, i.e. BTW, CUL8T, LOL, as long as we understand the context, what's the dif?
I do, however become irritated with questions that are just worded wrong. Like, "How is the dot on top of the i called?" I know that the asker wanted to know that the dot above the i and the j is called a tittle, but I was tempted to say, " Here, Dot! Here, Dot! Good Boy!" But I didn't. I answered his question.

I answer everyone's question whether or not they write in proper English or not. And I never point out mistakes unless it makes it confusing as to the meaning of the question. I'm sure I make spelling mistakes too, but it's rediculous to criticize someone for that - expecially on the Internet where people really shouldn't care.
Just put the comments of those idiots out of your mind. Yahoo Answers is too much fun to let a bunch of spelling nazis ruin it for us.

the easy rule is to carry close the adulthood of your target audience. in case you weblog on Tumblr, the bloggers will maximum in all likelihood no longer criticize the misuse of "you're" and "your" until eventually your submit is amazingly offensive; if so, you'd be bashed for making a impolite remark once you may want to no longer make a ideal sentence. The above is an same for YouTube. once you're talking to someone, it really is exceedingly not likely that he or she will be able to perfect you. on the point of etiquette, that is impolite; yet there are some that do. i'm a Grammar Nazi, yet I deal with to carry decrease back all of my corrections because it makes others experience incompetent (no longer that they are, yet that is the vibe that is prolonged in a while), and that i might want to in my opinion experience offended if it change into directed to me. if you're writing a letter to a CEO to make your self look better presentable and professional, it really is exceedingly recommended to envision your spelling. no human being ability to judge each and every human being upon first impressions; yet incorrect grammar and spelling grants off a poor first effect. i'm hoping that enables.

Yes, spelling matters.
No, people shouldn't be on your case for one or two typoes.
When someone's asking a question and they spell half the words incorrectly, it's a deterrent for serious answerers. If the asker can't be bothered enough to make a coherent question, why should we be bothered to make a coherent answer?
