Odds Toronto gets an NFL team?

I would like to see it happen, even though I know it will hurt the CFL, escially the argos.

Slim to none for the following reasons:

Local stadiums are all too small and no government entity would pony up the money for a new park right now. Apparently this is now a political football...ahem...even in a place like Los Angeles, so no way a ruling party would want the backlash over funding the NFL here. Groups like "Bread not Circuses" have already flexed their muscles by killing Olympic dreams around these parts, and they would step up to knock the NFL back south.

Second, the exchange rate is too fluid. Right now the team would be decent as the exchange is high, but exporters want that number to drop again...and we are a nation of exports, so the 65 cent dollar is good for that business, but not good to keep our sports on equal footing.

Third, Toronto is no longer the financial driving force that it once was. For a league that is usually looking into the future, it would make more sense to see a team land in Calgary or Vancouver, than here.

Fourth, Toronto is not good at supporting any teams outside the Maple Leafs. This isn't even a hockey town as proven by the resurrected Marlies, Ice Dogs, Battalion, and Majors. Rogers can't be filled for the Argos or Jays, and the Raptors no longer sell out the ACC and we've already lost an Arena Football League team there...how long would we support the NFL when it loses its luster? Again, the NFL would want a market that supports the team like the situation in Calgary.

Fifth, too much competition for the entertainment dollar in Toronto. Not only do we have the NHL, NBA, and MLB...three of the four majors...we also have a large theatre district and other entertainments that would pull away from the NFL. Realistically, a new NFL team wants to be the main community focus (see Carolina and Jacksonville as good examples).

Sixth, Canadian owner Pat Bowlen, in Denver, has already come out against Canadian franchises a number of times. He's not the most vocal owner, but Denver is a model franchise and he is well respected amongst his peers.

There are more reasons...many more...but I think that covers the big ones.

It won't happen. Rogers Place is small for the NFL to agree to put an expansion team in it. It's fine for a long established team like the Packers to play in Lambeau Field, etc. but the NFL is going to want to see a 85000 seat, domed and football only stadium for any new team in Toronto. So anyone who wants a team in Toronto has to pay for a stadium and the team/franchise fee. It's not as if any level of goverment is going to put up taxpayer's money so the NFL can make huge profits and undermine the CFL. Even a huge corporation like Rogers would face a shareholder rebellion if they said they were going to spend a billion on a stadium and a billion on a franchise. In the US they can get the taxpayer to pay for the stadiums, so that's where they will stay.

Toronto could not have a NFL team, Where would they put it. It would have to be outside the city and it would not be the same as either NFL cities. Toronto Police would not like the partying and the good old trail gates.....

Toronto would make a better NFL city than LA, there's been speculation about the Bills moving there in the past. I could certainly see a team end up eventually.

Slim to none. If the NFL is going to expand across borders it will be Mexico. They have already implimented a massive marketing campaign there. As well A city in Northern Mexico is the home of about 5,000 dallas cowboys season ticket holders, and has offered a stadium to be built for an expanison or moving team before. Suprisingly the NFL listened to the deal, it was apparently pretty good.

I'd say within the next decade. Especially since the NFL is trying to market in other countrys. Toronto is a great city for a professional football team, I guarateed it would be sucess.

Never happen. The CFL can't even get a decent TV contract, and NFL management has said on numerous occasions that they won't expand into Canada as long as the CFL is in operation.

It won't happen unless the CFL folds. The NFL and CFL have
a working relationship, where the NFL won't go into any market with an existing CFL franchise. The NFL doesn't want to see the CFL fold. The odds right now are slim to none. Your best bet is to hope the CFL collapses and the league becomes extinct.
