My child is breast fed. He eats, burps, and then spits up a significant amount within 10 seconds. We went to the Dr. this morning and we are taking him for an upper GI in a couple of days, but we are not expecting to find anything wrong there. The Dr. said that he is probably just a spitter. He wants to start him on reglan to see if it will help.

How is your baby's weight gain? Is the spitting up more of a "laundry problem" or is it a health problem?

There are also a few things you can consider besides reflux:

Some causes of excessive spitting up.....

Breastmilk oversupply or forceful let-down (milk ejection reflex) can cause reflux-like symptoms, and usually can be remedied with simple measures.

Food sensitivities can cause excessive spitting. The most likely offender is cow's milk products (in baby's or mom's diet). Other things to ask yourself: is baby getting anything other than breastmilk - formula, solids (including cereal), vitamins (fluoride, iron, etc.), medications, herbal preparations? Is mom taking any medications, herbs, vitamins, iron, etc.?

Babies with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) usually spit up a lot (see below).

Although seldom seen in breastfed babies, regular projectile vomiting in a newborn can be a sign of pyloric stenosis, a stomach problem requiring surgery. It occurs 4 times more often in boys than in girls, and symptoms usually appear between 3 and 5 weeks of age. Newborns who projectile vomit at least once a day should be checked out by their doctor.

My youngest daughter was on Reglan for awhile. My pediatrician decided to put her on it because her voice sounded hoarse & she had a constant runny nose. She would spit up some but not a whole lot. My ped said sometimes when babies have a little reflux it doesn't always come all the way out, just up in the throat causing the hoarsness. It helped my little girl very quickly, I say give it a try. Good luck, hope the baby feels better very soon.

My 4 year old daughter at 2 weeks old was diagnosed with reflux and put on reglan as well as zantac. On the reglan she was able to hold down her milk and bring up her weight. She was a baby drinking 1.5 oz for the first 4 months and so when at 2 weeks they suggested the medication I more then welcomed it. As time goes on they can wean your child off of it when they see the childs problem has been resolved. My daughter also had dysphagia (weak oral muscles) and required therapy to strength the muscles before allowing to be weaned off the medication.
