Alan Freed didn't actually coin the phrase "Rock n' roll," although he did give the name to the music. The term "rock" was Black slang for having sex, and was in use in blues songs way back into the 30's. The term "rock n' roll" was slang for having sex in a car, and it was intended as a pun to call the music "rock n' roll music" -- as if playing the records for kids having sex in cars while listening to the radio. Since most of white America didn't know the slang or what it meant, they didn't get the joke (and neither did radio censors) and assumed it was called that because the music was faster and wilder than anything else at the time.
