Metal is not mined, it is smelted from iron ore, which is the raw material used to smelt "metal" usually referred to as "pig iron" Smelting is the process where iron ore, carbon and several other minerals are super heated and melted to produce ingots of pig iron.

Just like any other mineral. It's dug up from the ground. In most mines, several metals and minerals may be present. It's all dug up together and sent to the refineries for processing and smelting into the various elements. Then it's sold to companies that make usable products.
