You have standard pop ups that you create yourself by clicking a hyperlink that will open another window. Then you have the "advertisements" which are sometimes advertisements and sometimes viruses. Your best chance is to never click on a pop up unless you are 100% sure it came from a site that you trust.

Pop-up advertising is supposed to trick you into clicking on them with phrases such as 'Click to claim your prize!!!!!111' or (fake) Windows dialog boxes (they don't work on Mac OS X users!)

There is a high probablity, especially with adverts offering security programs, that the links will take you to websites which install malicious software, like adware and spyware, onto your computer.

If you are receiving pop-up adverts whilst you are not browsing the internet, then you almost certainly have adware on your computer. A free program to help you get rid of adware can be found at this website http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Changing to a different browser can help protect you against security threats and block pop-ups. Firefox is a free web browser that has plenty of great features, including pop-up blocking. It also stops websites secretly installing software on your computer. Firefox can be found here: http://www.getfirefox.com

Usually, advertisements. But they can also be good, as in if you want to open a link in another window, when you click the link it creates a popup with the link you clicked in it.
