Yes definately tell them Sorry, but no more questions. I really cannot answer these type of questions. If they keep bothering then report it to HR !! and don't wait too long either because you might not get all the response from HR as well since you waited.
Goodluck.

As a HR person, what you did first was correct. By telling the person that its none of their business. Once you state this they should stop but in some cases it does not. The next step should be to report the harassment to the next level. This person should address the situation quickly to stop any further harassment in the work place. If you are not satisfied with the response or if the problem continues I would contact your HR officer. If you work for a smaller company that does not have a HR officer, I would consider contacting the owner of the business and explain that you feel uncomfortable with the situation. The last step would to be file harassment in the work place. In most situations in today's world, these are taken very seriously and are address and the problem stopped or someone is transferred or in most situations let go because they are a risk to the company in the event it happens again and a lawsuit is filed on it. The link I have provided defines what is Harassment in The Work Place for the state of WI. Most states laws are about the same as the one I have listed. Good luck and best wishes to correct your situation.

I agree with the documentation.
Dumb question, how personal are these questions? Depending on how personal they are, I would even suggest a small tape recorder in one of your desk drawers....under some papers.....this way when you do go to HR it will not be a he said/she said type of thing.
There might be an other issue here. You did not state the genders of the people involved. There might be more to this.
Your response is correct. It's just that this person is just not getting it.
Now matter what we all are entitled to work is a hostile free workplace. At the very least you should inform HR (after you gather data) that your co-worker makes you feel less than comfortable with their questions, making your workplace environment somewhat hostile. HR should do something about it at that point.

I think it is nice that you were trying to be polite, but if that person persists, I'm afraid you'll have to get a little more firm on your point. You'll need to say something like, "I'd really rather not discuss my personal life with you." It's a little blunt and you may make an office enemy, but this person doesn't seem to be getting the hint with your polite statements. Some people need you to be rude before they get the hint. If that person keeps it up even after you're more firm, you need to report them to your HR manager, as that is a form of harrassment, and it's totally not appropriate for the workplace. Best of luck!

It's probably some kind of power play for them to keep asking you. Start keeping track of the day, time and exact questions this person asks and your exact answers to them.
AFter a handful of more times (so that you will have it documented that it is an ongoing problem), go to your manager or HR person and tell them about it and present your documentation. They should research it and take necessary steps to make you feel comfortable.
I can't promise it will solve your problem, but at least you will have proceeded down the right path and will have it documented in the case anything comes up down the road about it.
