It depends.

Do you like to take notes longhand or on a PC? If PC, then you probably want a laptop that you can take to class. If your campus is wireless then you'll also easily be able to print when you're outside of your dorm and may not need a printer in your dorm room.

If you aren't that interested in carrying around a laptop, then a desktop could be in order. They're cheaper, but obviously not mobile. You'd need a printer.

IBM/Lenevo make good units, as does HP. Suggest buying long-term service (covers everything but theft, basically, even dropping a laptop or accidentally pouring coffee on the keyboard) to give you peace of mind, if you can.

I saw someone else recently suggested a MAC when the same question was posed. I don't know much about MACs so can't make a comparison, but I hear they're very easy to use, reliable, less expensive than PCs, etc. I don't know if you would run into any compatibility issues. Probably not.

I definitely recommend laptop vs desktop, because you want to be mobile.

If money is not of a huge concern then it's worth investing in an IBM/Lenovo as those are very sturdy machines.

Also, you can never get too much hard drive space (you will fill it up no matter what) so get the highest possible option in that. Same goes for processor capabilities.

The new PenPad from HP is awesome. It lets you write on the screen and is fast as lightning! Check out there website:
