Whoever told you that is an idiot. They do often say that newborns have an instinct abilty to swim right away, I dont know about that but they are extremely comfortable in water. The only way a baby wouldnt drown would be if they were born and the umbilical cord was still intact with the mom and the baby was recieving oxygen through the cord then they wouldnt need to breathe (not to mention know how to cause they only take their first breath once the cord is cut and they need oxygen) So if a baby was born and thrust immediately into water, maybe they wouldnt drown but once the cord is cut the baby need oxygen through the airway to the lungs

If you are talking about when a mother gives birth in a tub then the answer is: babies don't breathe with their lungs while they are in their mommy's belly. That's why when a baby is born the doctors need to hear the baby cry because this means they have taken their first breath. The baby is in water for 9 months so another few seconds isn't going to hurt them.

Because it's still connected to it's mother via the umbiblical cord, so she's still breathing for it. Once that's cut, they have to breathe on their own and will choke or drown if under water. In fact, some women prefer giving birth under water because it helps to relax their muscles.

for the first three weeks of it's life a child's bones are very light and porous, similar to cork. exposure to the nutrients found in breast milk and formula gradually bolsters the child's bones and they fill out, becoming more solid and less "seaworthy". the phrase "bouncing baby boy" stems from a misinterpretation of this fact and was originally "bobbing baby boy", referring to a 1803 hudson river infant regatta, in which the country's elite would sail their newborn children across the river every year on august 14th to encourage national morale.
disclaimer: in case any of you are truly idiotic, and you know that you are, the above is pure fiction, don't smother/drown/fold your children.

YOu mean a water birth? because baby lives in amniotic fluid, it won't take that first breath until reaches the air. It can't be under for a long period of time during birth because they do practice breathing.

They can drown, and have. Babies can drown in just a few inches of water.

i cant believe some of the comments that have been sent to you.
as if you would drown ya baby.
if you mean when they are born under water its because they havent breathed in air yet so their lungs arent working. as soon as they are lifted from the water they take their first breath and their lungs start to work.
as for when you take them swimming they havve the reflex to hold thier breath like us so they can stay under water but not for long
hope this helps hun x

They will if you keep them under long enough!
It's just a natural instinct that we're all born with to hold our breath when immersed in water.

I hope you didn't put your baby under water. What were you doing if you did. This is not a good question to ask without an explaintion.
