Usually routers have all of the configuration screens built right in as web pages. For simplicy you will need to connect you PC to the router directly (cable) rather than wirelessly since you don't know hour the previous owner had the wireless part setup.
Once you have the router connected to your PC, you can usually access the routers setup web pages by launching Internet explorer (or Firefox :) browser. In the address bar you enter the IP address of the router. I think Netgear uses 192.168.1.1 as the default IP for the router. Once you put 192.168.1.1 in your browsers address bar and pressed enter, if you have the correct IP address, you should get the router setup screens. If 192.168.1.1 doesn't work also try 192.168.15.1

If this gets you into the setup screens for the router, Look through the instruction to see if there is a procedure to reset the router back to default settings.

This will enable you to then use instruction manual to set everything up for you.

As for the CD, it has been my experience with LinkSys, and Dlink (never owned NetGear) that it is not necessary and usually only contains the supplimental information and utilities.

Good luck!

Software is not required to install your router. The software mentioned in the manual is a setup wizard, which helps you configure it through a step-by-step process. But, you can achieve the same access by following the steps on page 3-3 of your manual and login via Internet Explorer.

Usually, everything will auto-detect and you don't need to change anything. But, since there is a chance this is previously owned, the factory defaults might not be in place. I would suggest to make sure you do a factory default before you make any changes. Then, you can make sure that your wireless is secured and firewall is enabled.
